Pre-Conference - StoryCorps @ Your Library
Cara and I went to a program on using StoryCorps to record oral histories at your library. Since we won the National Medal, we have StoryCorps coming next month to record oral histories of what the library means to people we choose so it was really nice to hear more about StoryCorps and what they do, and tips for capturing good stories.
This was a fairly specialized, focused program and both Cara and I are glad we went. What was odd to us however was that we were the only NM library there; everyone else was just curious what StoryCorps did and it wasn't like they had a visit scheduled or there was some forthcoming grant program to take advantage of StoryCorps.
In any case, when we get back, Cara will be scheduling a meeting because we are going to need some assistance in lining up people to tell their stories, we will need a few interviewers, and we need to go over some logistics in advance of our StoryCorps visit during National Library Week on April 14-16.

I did indeed enjoy this workshop. Initially with this project, Storycorps partnered with ALA to have 10 pilot libraries conduct storycorps programming/interviews at their libraries. Three of the libraries presented, all very interesting presentations: Nashville PL, Smithville, TX, and Tampa PL. All seemed very pleased and happy with the results of recording the interviews and felt the contributions of the interviews were important to their collections. Just to clarify, these "interviews" will be audio only, and we will be focusing on what the library means to them. Storycorps will do all the technical and recording work; we will facilitate the interviews. Storycorps also encourages us to pair interviewees with someone they know - eg., child/grandparent, parent/child, friend/friend. So start thinking about some good pairs of interviewees we might be able to approach for interviews. Staff will also be encouraged to participate. Should be fun!
